Aaron Judge smashes three home runs for the second time in 2023

In June, a pivotal fly ball play changed the trajectory of Aaron Judge’s season, leading to his placement on the injured list and leaving questions about what might have been for the reigning American League MVP and the New York Yankees. However, on a recent Friday evening at Yankee Stadium, Judge answered those questions with a resounding performance, smashing three home runs in a 7-1 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Judge’s remarkable feat made him the first player in franchise history to achieve two three-homer games in a single season. He received a well-deserved curtain call from the ecstatic fans in attendance.

Reflecting on the moment, Judge shared, “It was great. Anytime Yankees fans want to show some love and appreciation, I love it. That was a pretty cool moment right there.”

Judge’s home run spree included a three-run shot in the third inning and a two-run blast in the fifth, both off D-backs starter Brandon Pfaadt. He capped off his incredible night with a solo homer in the seventh against Slade Cecconi. Remarkably, all three of Judge’s homers were hit to the opposite field, landing in right or right-center field.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone marveled at Judge’s greatness, saying, “You’re watching a great player. That’s greatness. He’s just different than everyone else.”

This memorable performance came almost a month after Judge’s first career three-homer game on August 23 against the Washington Nationals. The combined distance covered by Judge’s three homers on this particular night measured an impressive 1,182 feet, according to Statcast.

Luke Weaver, the Yankees’ starting pitcher, secured the victory with 5 1/3 scoreless innings and had high praise for Judge, remarking, “Aaron is outstanding. We were teammates in college and even in the Cape Cod League. He was humble then and remains the same person today. It’s a real privilege to share the field with him.”

Judge now joins the ranks of legendary Yankees players who have recorded multiple three-homer games, including Lou Gehrig (four), Joe DiMaggio (three), Alex Rodriguez (three), Tony Lazzeri (two), and Bobby Murcer (two).

Judge conveyed his gratitude, stating, “It’s truly remarkable. When you look at the roster of legendary players who have graced this organization and see those retired jersey numbers, I’m simply focused on fulfilling my role.”

While Gehrig remains the only Yankee to hit four homers in a single game (on June 3, 1932), Judge’s performance came tantalizingly close to providing him with that opportunity. He was left on deck when Estevan Florial flied out to end the eighth inning.

Judge’s remarkable season has been marked by adversity, including missing two months due to a torn ligament in his right big toe, an injury sustained during a daring catch on June 3 at Dodger Stadium. Despite the setbacks, Judge has managed to launch 35 home runs in just 100 games, putting him within nine homers of Shohei Ohtani’s AL-leading 44 (in 135 games). Judge also leads the Yankees in categories such as RBIs (70), walks (80), and on-base percentage (.401).

When reflecting on his season, Judge shared, “There’s been quite a bit of time I missed and opportunities that slipped away. While the numbers may tell one story, I tend to focus more on the games I couldn’t participate in and the chances I couldn’t seize.”

In the previous season, Judge made history by hitting 62 home runs, surpassing Roger Maris’ 61-year-old AL single-season record.

Boone praised Judge’s unwavering professionalism, noting, “One of the aspects I deeply admire about Aaron is his ability to stay composed, no matter the circumstances. He’s the embodiment of a true professional. As our captain, he sets an exemplary standard for our team, and he’s a fantastic teammate who maintains this mindset day in and day out.”

Despite the Yankees’ slim postseason chances, suggestions to rest Judge in the final week of the season have been dismissed by Boone. Judge is determined to continue playing, emphasizing the importance of showing up and giving it his all, even when not feeling at 100 percent physically.
