The Iron Claw’ Trailer: Zac Efron and Jeremy Allen White Build Muscle and Emotions in A24’s Wrestling Drama

Zac Efron and Jeremy Allen White have hit the gym hard, preparing to step into the wrestling arena. The highly-anticipated trailer for A24’s forthcoming sports biopic, “The Iron Claw,” featuring Efron and White, is now out. Directed by Sean Durkin, the film charts Efron’s journey as wrestler Kevin Von Erich, known as the Golden Warrior and a vital part of the renowned Von Erich wrestling dynasty. White co-stars as Kerry Von Erich, Kevin’s brother who also made a name for himself in the heavyweight division. Holt McCallany takes on the role of Fritz Von Erich, their father and a three-time world champion. The film delves into the lives of these family members, chronicling the ascent and decline of this influential wrestling dynasty. The ensemble cast also includes Lily James, Maura Tierney, Harris Dickinson, and Stanley Simons.

Even before the trailer release, the film generated considerable buzz due to the remarkable physical transformations of both Efron and White for their roles. Images showcasing Efron’s muscular physique and his Von Erich-inspired bowl cut triggered social media humor. White disclosed to GQ that he committed to adding 40 pounds of muscle for his character.

Efron’s early career was closely tied to musicals and comedies, but this film represents his most recent venture into the realm of compelling biopics following his portrayal of Ted Bundy in “Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile.” On the flip side, White is celebrated for his iconic television roles, particularly his 11-season stint as Philip Gallagher on Showtime’s beloved “Shameless” and his captivating performance as chef Carmy Berzato in FX’s acclaimed series, “The Bear.”

Writer-director Durkin is celebrated for his critically acclaimed psychological dramas such as “The Nest” and “Martha Marcy May Marlene,” both premiering at the Sundance Film Festival. While the Von Erichs achieved fame in the wrestling arena, their personal lives were marred by a series of tragedies, with five of Fritz’s six sons passing away before the age of 33, including three by suicide.

“The Iron Claw” is a joint venture involving A24, BBC Films, House Productions, and Access Entertainment. Audiences can anticipate its theatrical release on December 22, where it vows to deliver a captivating portrayal of the remarkable saga of the Von Erich family.
